Flood Evacuation Warning for Caravan Parks along Hawkesbury River from Windsor to Wisemans Ferry

2 March, 2012 · Posted by Rachael Goldsworthy

2 March 2012, 1:39AM AET

As a result of the flood level predicted by the Bureau of Meteorology the NSW State Emergency Service recommends that residents of low lying properties and caravan parks located on both sides of the Hawkesbury River between Windsor and Wisemans Ferry be prepared to evacuate within the next 24 hours with evacuation possibly as early as tomorrow morning.

Residents should monitor the situation and be prepared to evacuate when instructed to do so. A Flood Evacuation Order will be issued by the NSWSES, if evacuation is required.

Wherever possible, people should go and stay with family or friends, or make other accommodation arrangements. For people who need assistance, evacuation centres will be set up by Community Services. Details of the location of these centres will be provided should an evacuation be required.

The NSW SES recommends the following further actions:

  • Owners of movable caravans be prepared to relocate at short notice
  • Owners of non movable vans or homes secure their vans by tying them down to prevent flotation and isolate power to the van
  • Raise belongings by placing them as high as possible in the van or home.
  • Collect together essential medicines, important documents, mementos and photos to take these with you.
  • If possible, check to see whether your neighbours need help.
  • Make arrangements for care of pets or other animals or take pets with you to an evacuation centre along with their food.
  • Turn off the electricity and gas.
  • Take three days’ supply of clothes with you.
  • Do not drive or walk through floodwater.
  • Continue to listen to a local radio station for updates.

Flood Update…

1 March, 2012 · Posted by Rachael Goldsworthy

Flooding update – Thursday 12.50pm

BY TONY BOSWORTH

The latest news on the Hawkesbury flood situation at noon today (Thursday) is that SES have released a statement saying it expects Windsor and North Richmond bridges to be closed from early tomorrow, Friday, March 2.The SES also said schoolchildren who need to cross the river in either direction to get to school would be best kept home on Friday.

A Warragamba Dam spokeswoman said at 12.15pm today that the dam’s flood gates are still expected to automatically open between 8-10pm tonight (Thursday).

But as of noon, the Bureau of Meteorology had still not upgraded its ‘flood watch’ status to the more definitive ‘flood warning’, but has forecast more heavy rain in the dam’s catchment of up to 90mm in the next 24 hours. This is expected to continue until Saturday.

Those with expert knowledge of the Yarramundi area say that the water level in the Hawkesbury would start hitting the Yarramundi Bridge between 2am and 4am on Friday morning and that the bridge would be submerged by 4am if Warragamba Dam water is released as expected tonight.

This would make the flood peak at about 8am Friday, submerging the Windsor and Richmond bridges from then on.

The SES said moderate flooding in North Richmond and Windsor areas including Pitt Town Bottoms and Gronos Point, is likely from late Thursday evening to early Friday morning.

NSW SES assistant commissioner Keith Fitzgerald said “parents whose children attend schools in the Hawkesbury-Nepean area are encouraged to keep their children home tomorrow, or if you do send them to school, closely monitor the weather situation and road closures. Do not take unnecessary risks to collect your children from school.”

The SES warned parents to ensure their children knew to stay well away from flooded rivers, creeks and drains and not to play in floodwater.

Flood-affected areas will be Richmond Lowlands, including Cornwallis, low-lying areas at the northern part of Richmond, low-lying areas at the western part of Hobartville, and low-lying areas in the northern part of Agnes Banks.

Petition Opportunity Knocks…says Anna Yeo of Hawkesbury Gazette

30 January, 2012 · Posted by Rachael Goldsworthy

A move by group Community Action for Windsor Bridge (CAWB) to use the International Sand Sculpting Competition as a way to boost signatures for a petition against the new Windsor Bridge proposal has frustrated some local residents.” says Anna Yeo of Hawkesbury Gazette

Windsor Business Group member, Max Jarman said the Windsor Bridge proposal was the only way to go. He feared that without it Windsor would die.

Michael Milman said “they weren’t aware….it’s not that Heart of the Hawkesbury supports what this group is trying to achieve…we support their right for a democracy”
