Commemorating ANZAC Day in Isolation for 2020

24 April, 2020 · Posted by Rachael Goldsworthy

Australians are set to embrace the first Driveway Dawn Service and whilst we are in isolation, now more than ever, it is important to keep the ANZAC spirit alive.

Towards that aim, Australians are encouraged to “Light up the Dawn” in their driveways this Anzac Day. “Lots we can do together, just at a safe distance”, says Editor Justin Lees, of Anzac 360.

ANZAC is a day to commemorate our diggers and whilst services have been cancelled due to the Coronavirus we all look to new ways to commemorate this very important day for Australians and New Zealand Army Corps.

RSL NSW has offered some suggestions for ANZAC Day:-

  1. “Record yourself reciting the ode or sharing a message of support for veterans #ANZACSpirit https://www.facebook.com/events/1369894726549555/
  2. Light up the dawn – At 6am on ANZAC Day, go to the end of your driveway or stand on your balcony and listen to a brief commemorative service http://rslanzacspirt.com.au
  3. Tune into live commemorative services on ABC at 5:30am – download the order of service here both services will be streamed live.” #ANZACSpirit

Lest We Forget #AnzacDay

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down

of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them”.

“These very famous words are just a part of a poem by Laurence Binyon 1869-1943 that he called The Fallen. It was first published in the Times newspaper on 21 September 1914. As this was very early in the war, it was written as a reaction to the high casualty rates of the British Expeditionary Force at Mons and Le Cateau, but the four famous lines have now taken an existence of their own that apply to all war casualties.”

Lest we forget.

Is there an Anzac Day public holiday in 2020?

ANZAC Day in 2020 will fall on a Saturday. “The Public Holidays Act 2010 names ANZAC Day to be observed with a public holiday on 25 April.

“Australians love their public holidays and when they happen to fall on the weekend, we’re grateful when we get the Monday off as a substitute. One of the more sombre public holidays is ANZAC Day and in 2020, it falls on a Saturday.

Only two states and territories (Western Australia and ACT) will be getting replacement days this year, meaning most of us will need to be back at work on a Monday.”

What is the theme of Mardi Gras 2020?

“The theme for Mardi Gras 2020 is… WHAT MATTERS! Mardi Gras started in the spirit of protest, and it is in that spirit we want you to tell us WHAT MATTERS! We’ve come so far, and we know there’s so much further to go together. ” Source: https://www.mardigras.org.au/what-matters

Mardi Gras is an opportunity for all of us to shine, express who we are and be a beacon of LGBTQI pride for those among us who are still finding the strength to be who they are. So don’t let fear hold us back – take risks, be strong, courageous, and be proud and let’s all come together at Mardi Gras 2020 and celebrate What Matters.

Produced with SBS and featuring many members of our LGBQI communities, watch our 2020 Mardi Gras theme video below:”

The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is one of the world’s largest and most high profile LGBTIQ+ celebrations. Having started as a civil rights protest in 1978, Mardi Gras has grown into an opportunity to celebrate diversity, equality, inclusion and pride on a global scale.

Following previous’s historic same-sex marriage vote, this year’s Mardi Gras will be a celebration of how far the LGBTIQ+ communities and their allies have come in the last 42 years, as well as a reflection on the community’s hopes for the future.
